How to get there |
This is toll road (free to bicyclists) to the monastry/retreat/gasthof Maria Waldrast. There is a gravel road that is shorter, which is no good for a bike road, but the asphalt road is really steep enough! The asphalt ends by a water tap at Maria Waldrast (1641m), from here there is 530m to the pass by a wooden gate. The gravel part has a steep ramp (in the photo), but if you can handle it after the hard climbing before, then it flattens out for the last metres. It is a nice climb. The climb from Innsbruck (590m) is extremely gradual until the turn-off at Matrei (989m). |
Other comments |
This passage should be popular with mountain bikers, but I did not see any other cyclists when I was there. The gravel road down the other side looked good and might be possible to use with a road bike, but I am sure it will be faster to go back down the same way. The road is narrow and there could be tourists in buses going up here.
